The El Clasico result on Sunday night was a classic: Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice to end the hosts’ perfect start to the La Liga season. It was the season’s first league Clásico, the 265th meeting of Spain’s two giants, and it lived up to every bit of its billing.

Barcelona had won all nine of their opening league matches and were chasing a piece of history as the first team in Spanish top-flight history to win their first ten. Instead, Madrid left Catalonia with all three points, cutting Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to just three points.
The win was also Madrid’s first at Barcelona’s home ground since October 2023, and it gave José Mourinho’s side a famous away victory in a fixture he had not contested as Real Madrid manager since 2013.
El Clasico result: Mbappé strikes before half-time
The El Clasico result took shape four minutes before half-time. Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, reaching ten La Liga goals for the season when a clearance from Gerard Martín struck him and deflected into the net.
Madrid had threatened earlier, with Arda Güler firing over the bar after capitalising on a misplaced pass from Pedri. Mbappé himself had come close before his opener, and the goal rewarded a first half in which the visitors created the clearer chances on the counter-attack.
Barcelona dominated possession for long spells but could not turn it into goals before the break. Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who replaced the flu-stricken Thibaut Courtois, made crucial saves to keep the hosts out, and Madrid went in 1-0 up at half-time.
Raphinha equalises, then Mbappé wins it late
Barcelona responded after the break, and the El Clasico result looked set for a draw when Raphinha equalised in the 61st minute. The Brazilian collected the ball inside the penalty area and finished into the far corner, registering his 15th goal across all competitions this season.
The equaliser lifted the home crowd and set up a frantic final half-hour, with both sides creating chances as the contest intensified. Lunin again denied Barcelona at key moments, and the game seemed to be heading for a share of the points.
Then, with three minutes of normal time remaining, Mbappé struck again. Eduardo Camavinga won possession from a through ball and squared for his compatriot to finish from close range, sealing a 2-1 win. It was a cruel blow for Barcelona, who could not find a second equaliser after falling behind again.
The late winner also underlined Mbappé’s growing influence on this fixture. His two goals decided the match, and his pace on the break repeatedly stretched a Barcelona defence that had looked unbeatable during its nine-match winning run.
What the El Clasico result means for the title race
The El Clasico result changes the shape of the La Liga title race without changing the team at the top. Barcelona remain first on 27 points from ten games, but their lead is now three points rather than six. Atlético Madrid sit second on 25 points, with Real Madrid third on 24.
That matters because Barcelona no longer carry an unbeaten league record into their next fixtures. Their remarkable run of nine consecutive victories is over, and the champions must now prove they can respond to a first defeat of the season.
For Madrid, the win is worth far more than three points. It is a statement victory away from home against the leaders, in front of a packed Camp Nou, and it strengthens their position in a title race that now looks genuinely open. Mourinho’s side showed they can win the biggest game in Spain without their first-choice goalkeeper and against a team in record-breaking form.
The two sides will meet again in the return league Clásico on 9 May 2027, when Madrid host at the Bernabéu. Until then, the El Clasico result from Camp Nou will stand as the defining game of the season so far: Mbappé twice, Raphinha once, and a perfect start ended by the team Barcelona least wanted to lose to.
