2026 World Series: Brewers Take 2-0 Lead Over Rays After Controversial Game 2 Ending

2026 World Series

The 2026 World Series has a clear early leader — and a finish nobody will stop arguing about. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 in Game 2 on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Fall Classic, after the game ended on a disputed checked-swing strikeout.

Milwaukee had already won Game 1 by 3-2 on Friday at American Family Field. Now the series moves to Florida for Game 3 on Monday, with the Rays needing a home win to stay alive — and the Brewers two wins from a first championship in franchise history.

2026 World Series: A dramatic ending in Milwaukee

Game 2 came down to the final pitch. With the tying run on third base, two outs and a full 3-2 count, Tampa Bay designated hitter Yandy Díaz faced Milwaukee reliever Aaron Ashby. Ashby’s pitch in the dirt was ruled a swing on appeal to first base umpire James Hoye, and Díaz was called out on strikes to end the game.

Díaz thought he had held up and began walking toward first base before the appeal call went against him. Replays showed just how close the check swing was, and the call immediately split opinion — with analysts noting that under the automated check-swing review rules used at some minor league levels, the pitch would not have been called a swing.

It was a cruel way to lose a one-run game. Had the call gone the other way, Jonathan Aranda would have stepped in with runners on the corners and two outs, still trailing by one.

How the first two games were won

Game 1 belonged to Milwaukee’s pitching. Jacob Misiorowski held Tampa Bay to one run over five innings, and Trevor Megill closed out the 3-2 win despite allowing a run in the ninth.

Game 2 was messier. Logan Henderson started for Milwaukee in his World Series debut but lasted only three innings, giving up four runs. Tampa Bay catcher Liam Hicks hit a home run and drove in two, but Milwaukee’s bullpen held firm: Abner Uribe earned the win and Ashby the save, striking out three over one and two-thirds innings.

The 2026 World Series matchup itself is historic. Neither franchise has ever won the World Series — the first such Fall Classic since 1980. Milwaukee is back in the World Series for the first time since 1982, after sweeping the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. Tampa Bay reached its third World Series, after 2008 and 2020, by beating the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 in the American League Championship Series.

What happens next

Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, with Games 4 and 5 also in Tampa Bay before a possible return to Milwaukee for Games 6 and 7. The series is famous for speed: both clubs ranked among baseball’s top five in stolen bases this season, and the aggressive running has continued into October.

The controversial ending will only add fuel to baseball’s debate over check swings. Major League Baseball has expanded replay review over the past decade, and prominent plays in big moments tend to accelerate change — check swings could be next. For now, though, the only number that matters is the series score: Brewers 2, Rays 0.
